New GD77's hard to find, discontinued?

Post by wa2n » Sat Mar 26, 2022 8:43 pm

I was looking to add a 4th GD-77 after reading on FB that batteries are getting scarce and it appears the Radiodity no longer shows the GD77 for sale on their website, and "currently unavailable" shows on Amazon's webpage. There are several on EBay for $150, which is almost double what I paid for the first one. I did find it available from China via a Newegg listing for $120 (including tax) and ordered it.

So is this kind of the end of the line for new OpenGD77 radios? I understand that there is a Baofeng and TTY model that works with that variant of the OpenGD77 firmware. Do these radios work as well, and are they still available?

With the current worldwide component shortages many electronic items are not available.

The GD77 and it’s clones use chips that have now been superseded, so TYT may be forced to stop production if the chips do not become available again.

I saw a post here that the TYY MD-760 is the same as the GD77 and those do appear for sale on AliExpress for $86. Something like 1400 were available recently. So is this radio truly a clone that will work with opengd77 firmware?

TYT manufacture the radios, MD760 is their part number. Radioddity buy the radios from TYT and call them GD-77.

So as far as we know the MD760 Is identical to the GD-77. None of the developers have an MD760 but people have successfully loaded the OpenGD77 firmware onto them.

GD77 is definitely just a MD760 with a different label.
If you open the radio and look on the PCB it has MD760 written on it.

The only difference is the official firmware , and official CPS for these radios. Radioddity paid to have extra features added to the MD760 official firmware, they also paid for a completely new CPS, because the GD77 is aimed at Hams but the MD760 is aimed at commercial users e..g. Security guard companies who need very little functionality

I went to www.radioddity.com today and, on the first page there's an 'Open Box Sale' at the lower right. Click on that and there are a few GD-77 open-box radios available (at time of writing it said there were 11 left in stock for $85 each). I also got a $10 off discount for being a first time buyer (they emailed me a coupon).

In case anyone is interested…. I noticed today (April 11, 2022) that the GD-77 is displaying as available on that large eCommerce site named for a large river in Brazil. Which was not the case last week.

OOOPS! Correction, it’s the GD-77s that’s available. The one with no screen, etc. Sorry, my wishful thinking overrode my eyesight. :D

I managed to get a TYT-MD760 from a vendor on AliExpress and it works just fine with Opengd77, thanks. I went through two orders, each vendor messaged me that the factory was out of parts for that model and had no production date set. They offered me a "chinese" version that they did have in stock which is what I ended up getting. Thanks for that link, I did order another one today as it showed "last one".
