Power supply for MD-9600

Post by SO9S » Thu Mar 23, 2023 7:22 am

I am going to buy MD-9600 and I am wondering which power supply should I buy.
It's important to be small. The radio is up to 50W, so I think Jetfon PC810 (8A) should be enough, but I'm not sure. I'm also thinking about Jetfon PC-35SW and PC-30SWM, but they are 2 or even 3 times more expensive and unfortunately larger. Any experience with the PC810 or any other ideas?
EDIT: I'm also thinking about a converted for 13.8V HP server power supply.

Checked on my MD-9600 and depending on frequency, high power ( 40 W ) can be slightly more than 10 A in FM.

DMR is difficult to measure, the average current is much lower but I have no idea about the peaks.

I run my MD-9600 on a 30 A supply which is more than enough.

Thank you, so the PC810 may not be enough. So I will consider the others I mentioned or your suggestions.

I guess 15 A could be OK

10A is OK as long as the PSU will actually deliver 10A

I have a Chinese LONGWEI PSU that claims 10A, but will not produce more than 8A without the output voltage dropping

Um, I run my 9600's at 25w ... and that so just about any supply that is handy will work f.b. om. That power reduction is not enough to worry about as that power level works well enough for everything I need a high(er) power radio to do when using my 9600s for either base station or mobile.

The repeaters in our happy little cluster (5 at last count) run about the same r.f. output power levels too. They all work very well too. (Antenna gain is your friend... hi hi.) AND for the record at 25 watts r.f. output power with BOTH radios operating (the repeaters use two each; a rcvr and xmitter, with BOTH radios operating at the same time); the d.c. power consumed is well under 10 amps (approx. 8 amps or so). That also including the repeater controllers and cooling fans.

P.S. Here's "da math":

Assuming 50 percent efficiency, i.e. 100 watts input (d.c. power) required to achieve 50 watt rf output power; you are well under 10 amps consumed d.c. power at 13.6 volts d.c. ... But that is *probably* (undoubtedly) a unrealistically low efficiency number for your transmitter. Nonetheless this example demonstrates that with a decent 10amp supply for your 25 watts radio (output r.f. power) you will get good results. AND decent power supplies at that power level with great r.f. shielding and capable of delivering 10 amps continuously are not hard to find as great prices. (We pay about 30 u.s. dollars for surplus HP supplies and never more than 60 u.s. dollars for brand new ones for our repeaters.)
