No GD77 COM port

Post by KD7MW » Tue Feb 08, 2022 3:24 am

Brand new GD-77, Windows 10 Professional with Windows Updates enabled. I've done nothing to it using the manufacturer's I'm just trying to back up the current firmware, EEPROM, etc. before flashing OpenGD77 to the radio. No matter what I do, I can't get a GD77 serial port to appear in Device Manager or (obviously) in CPS. So I can't connect to the radio. I've tried installing OpenGD77 CPS, and also the standalone COM_DRIVER software. I've run both installs as Administrator, and as my regular account, answering yes to the "allow to make changes?" prompt. I keep getting "success" messages from the com driver install, but no GD77 "serial" port appears. I've uninstalled and reinstalled CPS. I've tried connecting the radio both on and off, then turning it on. I've tried connecting the cable to the PC first, then the radio and vice versa. Nothing works.

The PC is seeing the cable and radio, because when I connect the radio to different USB ports, I get a message that the MCU Mouse Demo is being installed. And sometimes when I connect the radio, Device Manager refreshes. I've tried "scan for hardware changes." But I never get a GD77 serial port. I also don't believe I'm seeing anything new in "Universal Serial Bus controllers" in Device Manager.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi,

You have to flash the OpenGD77 prior being able to backup all Flash/MCU/etc using the OpenGD77 CPS.

Cheers.

Thanks, Daniel. But if I don't have a GD77 COM port, how can I flash the firmware?

When the GD77 is in bootloader mode (SK1+SK2+Power on), it won't be detected as a Serial port device, but a HID one.

Ah... Thank you! That was the missing piece in my brain. I thought you had to have the COM port before you could do anything.

I've flashed the 2021 July firmware, it looks good, and the GD77 COM port now appears on my PC.

Merci bien!
