How do I roll back to the original firmware?

Post by G4WXN » Wed Jan 26, 2022 4:23 pm

I have backed up all the firmware
Flash, MCU settings etc, but for the life of me I cannot get the firmware to update, when I attempt this, I simply end back at the GD77 firmware.

To install the manufacturer firmware, you need to use the manufacturer tool.

Be aware that if you don't restore your Flash and EEPROM backups before reinstalling the official firmware, the official firmware may no longer allow you to update your radio with any future versions of the official firmware or to go back to the OpenGD77 firmware

I don't know if this is by design in the newer versions of the official firmware, or whether its a bug.

My money is on that its a bug in the official firmware

I read the instructions carefully and I understand that I have to backup Mcu, flash ,eeprom just after moving to OpenGD77 to be able to rollback to original firmware.
And I understand that I have to use the original firmware update program to install original firmware.

But where do I use the restored mcu, flash and eeprom when installing official firmware ?
There is no option to use these files on official firmware updater ???

I'd really appreciate any help on this...

I don't understand where I will use the eeprom, flash and mcu that I backed up.

OpenGD77CPS

MCU backup is only in case you completely fry the MCU and have to reload using a hardware connected programming dongle.
You can't restore the MCU file using the CPS

ok. mcu not needed for rollback to original firmware.
what about the eeprom and flash files ?
when and where shall I use them when going back to original fw ?

Use the OpenGD77 CPS to restore the flash and eeprom backups. Then use the manufacturers update program to reload the firmware.

And never, I really mean NEVER execute a factory reset procedure with manufacturer's firmware.

ok thanks.
but I really don't understand this logic.
can someone explain me ?

When we want to use OpenGD77:
1. we first overwrite the firmware with unofficial OpenGD77 FW
2. we backup flash and eeprom (and to be safe mcu) with the unofficial FW

when we want to go back to original FW:
3. we restore eeprom and flash , using the unofficial CPS and with the unofficial FW (I don't understand why we do this , since we did not change anything on eeprom & flash why do we restore them with the one from step 2 ?)
4. using official updater , we update FW to original.

If we miss step 2 or step 3 , we may have a problem with official FW.
Now I really don't understand it. step 2 and step 3 are just backing up some thing and restoring it back when it was unchanged.
what is the logic here ?
