GD77 FW for a mobile radio?

Post by daratt » Sun Mar 28, 2021 1:52 pm

Hi all

Thoroughly enjoying the GD77 firmware on my Baofeng 1801. Is there a likely candidate for a <Baofeng> mobile radio which could take the GD77 firmware? Any thoughts?

There are not many low cost DMR Mobiles available. The only two that are readily available are the TYT MD9600 (and re-badged versions) and the Anytone AT-D578UV. Neither of these is based on the same hardware as the GD77 and so porting the OpenGD77 firmware to these radios would be a massive task and unlikely to happen.

The OpenRTX project is interesting but not yet at a usable level, especially for the MD9600 which is the least developed. It is progressing slowly but there is still a massive amount of work needed. It will be interesting to see how it progresses.

I have two MD9600s and I used to love them. However after using OpenGD77 for some time I now really hate the user interface on the 9600s. Everything takes so many button presses!

I did look at porting to the MD-9600 etc but the cost of the radios is more than I can afford, as I need to buy at least 2 of each radio

Also, the development and support of the GD77 type radios already takes most of my spare time.

I wish the OpenRTX project well, but as they only seem to have one active developer. Trying to develop a complete fully featured firmware for multiple different radios, is likely to take a very long time... Even with them being able to re-use all the code and data from the OpenGD77 project.

I am in theirs Discord group and it seems there is more then one developer, at least 4, or 5, while there are guys joining and trying to contribute on weekly basis. I really hope they succeed making those radios at least half of what OpenGD77 is. I would be very happy with FW similar to OpenGD77 in my MD-9600 and I bet Colin would be too. ;)

Only 2 people commit regularly to their github repository and recently it is only 1 person.
