Is there a way to see the callsign of the person talking rather than their radio ID or am I configuring something wrong?

Hi John!
Yes, there are 2 ways how to see the callsign (and probably the name as well) of the talking person.
1) Download the database. In the CPS, go to Extras/Download Callsign Database, enter the country/locality you want to download (the whole database is too big for GD-77) and flash it to the radio.
2) Using Display Options menu, activate display of Talker Alias.
You can combine both ways, the Display Options menu lets you select the order of these sources to be used for displaying the data.
With regards / 73,
Pavel

Talker Alias display is ON by default. You do not need to change anything.

Do Not enable "Talker Alias Tx" this is something entirely different, and it affects the Tx not the Rx, and generally only use for Simplex DMR.
Turning on Talker Alias Tx will make the radio incompatible with Motorola repeaters, as they don't recognise Talker Alias data.

The database download into your GD77 is pretty much automated. I just choose to select the North American callsigns.

Talker Alias from Brandmeister is also a great source, which is automatic. You can see this in action if you have a hotspot, and turn on the real time "Live Logs" tracing in Pi-Star. The radio will use the information is has available to it for displaying the call sign and operator information.

The amount of features implemented in IOpenGD77 is frankly remarkable. As the developers see "interesting" opportunities, they code for them. This has made this open technology effort very potent and successful.

I think the PiStar callsign display is via looking up the Id in a database it automatically downloads.

I don't think PiStar uses the Talker Alias data.

Hi,

And on top of this, if the PiStar is misconfigured, (like turning ON DMR EmbeddedLCOnly) "it" won't broadcast the Talker Alias from BM.

Cheers.

Digital Contacts is used for Talkgroups and Callsigns that you use a lot for private calls and such, this storage is limited in size

The main database with all other callsigns is loaded via Extras->Download callsign database , I use radioid.net
