Yeah, I understood the part with the USB current , I was thinking of the voltage as the link gave me the 4S version, I guess our batteries have two cells and that the "S" in reality means how many 3.7 V cells you have.
Most, if not all of the OpenGD77 devices using 2 cells = 7,4 volt in total. Cells are in series connected, therefore 2S

Roger,

just for my info (and maybe for others) - the product of your link will not be delivered to Austria
(new crazy 'packaging disposal law'), but some Aliexpress dealer do deliver, so I found & ordered:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004689821903.html and
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004682732678.html
Remark: the first link - end number ...03.html seems to be like yours, just in 'green' ;-)

Low efficiency is not a big deal at that powerlevel, nevertheless, by chance, did you check one of
those in my links?

73s
The item code ending in 03 is the same module

The item code ending in 78 is the other module which tried, but seems to have lower efficiency, and depending on the version you bought, the current from USB is over 3A, which outputs approximately 1A at 8V into the radio.

It is possible to change the current of both types of module by changing a resistor. The module type ending in 03 uses a very low value resistor to set the current, 0.01 or 0.05 Ohms ( 1A and 2A input current)

The 78 module uses a high resistor of 180k for 1A on the output . I changed this to 220k to reduce the USB current.
But t the effeciency of this module is no good, so I don't recommend it

Hi,

Before I saw this mail-thread I made a similar rebuild using a USB C Power Decoy Module (PDC004-PD 12V) together with TP5100 configured for 8.4 V. Left the 12V jack for compatibility and protected both power sources by serial diodes (1N4002).
Note that this setup is not as generic as the one presented earlier. It lacks the boost regulator and only works from chargers and power banks that have USB C PD/12V capability.
Anyway, here comes a couple of photos of the ugly PoC build!
If anyone would be interested in the PDC004 plug, you can check https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5873227.

PS Thanks a lot for the effort put into OpenGD77 and RT3S et al. It really makes these HT:s shine! DS

Thanks for sharing.

I see someone else posted that the TP5100 can accept 5V but I didn't test this yet.

Thanks! Re TP5100. If I understand the info correctly you can power it with 5V if you charge one cell. If you charge two cells in series (8.4), you will not be able to power it with 5V as it is a buck converter. In that case you need 12V, but you can probably run it with slightly lower and higher voltages. The spec is specifying 18V as max, but I would not go that high.

OK.

In that case these dedicated USB C , 2 cell , charging modules seem to be the best option

What type of radio/charger is it to the left in the top picture ?

@VK3KYY Ordered some 2S 1A boost modules to build an additional charger.
@SA0BUX The radio in the second charger is a RETEVIS RT3S running openGD77. The charger for that is based on https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4410853 but with a USB PD 12V decoy module and TP5100. This charger is a little bit more finicky when it comes to the battery contacts in comparison to the one based on the original charger. Will probably use a 2S 1A boost module with the printed charger in my next build.

Something I search for is 2x18650 based replacement batteries with built in USB C charger. If anyone has seen such a device, please let me know!

Got a 2S/1A USB C charger module. Seems to work with a USB C - USB A cable to a USB A charger but not with a USB C - USB C cable to a USB C charger. Do I need to add 5k1 resistors from CC1 and CC2 to ground or is there some other way to handle this?

I now only use USB C chargers, so I didn't need to worry about converter cables
