Where to buy a MD-2017

Post by VK3KYY » Mon Mar 06, 2023 9:41 pm

Looking on AliExpress the cheapest version with GPS is

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005257953233.html

However the pictures do not show a USB cable, and I don't know if this radio uses a special USB cable??

There is another more expensive listing, which shows that the radio comes in a box, but no USB cable is shown for this listing either

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005257953233.html

I will try contacting the vendor to ask if USB cable is included

OK

I thought it may be a special cable

I better check with the vendor

I have a GD-55-Plus which someone gave me , but it had a faulty cable IP67 cable, and I did not buy a new cable because he told me the radio was also faulty

https://www.anyradios.com/product/upgra ... tal-radio/

I just checked and the GD-55Plus is not a MD-2017, but it is probably another Baofeng or TYT Radio

I can't remember if I ever opened it to see what MCU etc is inside

Edit. With the GD-55 plus, it looks like its USB cable has a USB to serial converter in the plug :-(

OK. I should read the description not just look at the pictures ;-)

BTW. I saw a youtube video review of the MD-2017 and it showed the special button in the middle which appears to operate like a small track pad , like on a laptop

Can you look on the PCB for the front panel to see the connections to this control and whether there is an interface IC on the display + keypad PCB, or whether perhaps the MCU reads some ADC values directly from this control.

Because the review showed that it was necesary to swipe across this control and it did not seem to be possible only to press on the arrows, which made the operation more difficult.

Ideally the firmware should be able to detect press on the arrow parts of this control

The 4 arrows is printed on plastic case, They are not buttons.

The little white dot in the middle is a shit, it can be rocked up and down and left and right, and can be used as a confirmation when pressed, but it is too small and too smooth, and the surface has no friction like silicone. I have sweaty hands and can hardly operate it. So I used the up and down buttons on the side, and used P1 and P2 as left and right buttons.

All parts of the front panel, including speakers, microphones, joysticks and keypads, even the pcb are firmly glued to the case, that's why it can achieve IP67.

I'll figure out a way to get them down. Even it may totally break the front panel

OK ...

Shame the dot is diffcult or impossible to use :-(

Do not worry about taking it apart, because it may damage the radio

It may be possible to capture the data etc from the front panel to understand how that device communicates with the CPU

I have now ordered from the first link I posted on AliExpress

I ordered the GPS version even though it costs $20 AUD more expensive, because the cost of a module would be at least $10 AUD

Update.

There seems to be some problem paying the vendor, so my order has not been placed :-( and payment is pending

And because I tried again to pay, I now have 2 x Md2917 radios pending payment :-(
