1701 DMR Audio

Post by G0NQA » Wed Mar 06, 2024 9:11 pm

Firmware Version : 20231231192808

I’m new to DMR so it could be user error, but some stations present with loud crackles and pops on their audio, whilst others are fine. These issues appear at random. I’ve tried adjusting the AGC in the sound option but anything >3dB is too harsh, AGC off or 0dB is more useable but problem persists.

Most users state the 1701 has good RX audio, just wondered if I have a faulty radio?

Yes, the issue is only on DMR audio, FM is fine.

Do you have any other DMR radios.

Are you listening to a hotspot or a repeater and on which network.

Strange noises are not uncommon on DMR and are generally a result of bad network connectivity but can also be caused by hotspot calibration errors

Io questi rumori li recepisco solo sulla frequenza 431.475.

Thanks for your reply.

I don’t have any other DMR radios but I do have a ThumbDV Ambe 3000 USB stick with BlueDV which I could compare.

I’m listening on Brandmeister, mainly TG91 on a hotspot: RPI Zero W2 with an Aliexpress modem attached. According to WPSD my error bit rate is low.

I do have 2 other modems also on 70cm for D-Star and AllStar. I will change frequencies to rule out co-channel interference.

Some stations sound really clear, the pops/clicks and static sounds are intermittent.

Nearby interference perhaps?

It can be bit error from the network too, especially on TG 91 where the distant part can be located almost everywhere.

On a pistar hotspot you can see if it's network errors.

On xlx reflectors we have ambe transcoding that can convert d-star to dmr and my experience is that such transcoding can be prone to distorted voice.

Thank you, I have noticed some network errors from stations from various geographical locations but haven’t correlated them yet with the audio anomalies. I was going to buy another radio but based on the information provided will complete further analysis.
