Unable to flash DM-1701

Post by W8RJB » Sun Apr 16, 2023 1:27 am

Hello,

I just purchased a new DM-1701, and I'm unable to flash OpenGD77 on it. I select the .bin file and write to the radio, and the progress bar moves forward and backward, forward and backward...until it fails.

Here is the .bin file I'm using: downloads/MDUV380_DM1701/Firmware/Latest/OpenDM1701.bin

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

You need to provide more information

Explain the steps you took to get to the point where the progress bar doesnt move correctly

Thank you for getting back to me. I apologize for my lack of details. I've been following the guide posted in this forum. Here are the steps I took:

1. I downloaded the .bin file from the link I posted in my previous message, as well as the firmware flash tool for the DR-1701. I also downloaded the OpenGD77 CPS.

2. I opened the flash tool and clicked on 'Open file upgrade'. I located the .bin file that I downloaded using the link in my previous message and selected it. I then clicked on the "Download file of upgrade" button, which then opened a progress bar that appears to move forward. When it reaches less than halfway on the progress bar, the progress bar goes backward instantly to 0%, then continues to go forward again about less than half way, and again goes right back to 0%. This repeats probably about 50 times or so before a "failed" error occurs.

3. After realizing this wasn't working, I successfully flashed the radio back to the original firmware without issues using the same firmware update tool.

Prior to following the steps above, I programmed the radio using the original CPS. Nothing else was done to the radio.

Please let me know if you need any additional details.

Thank you,
Ray

Hi,

You need to use the OpenGD77 CPS to flash the firmware. See https://opengd77.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=2760

BTW, you wrote 'DR-1701', I guess that's a typo, isn't it ?

Cheers.

Yes that was a typo, I meant DM-1701.

I guess I need to take a better look at the guide. I could swear it said that I must use the original firmware tool that came with the radio to flash the radio with OpenGD77. However, taking a second look, it appears this line through me off from the guide....

"You must also have the official firmware loader installed onto your PC, or the firmware update driver, because this installs the Device Firmware Update (DFU) driver needed for the OpenGD77 CPS to upload firmware into the radio."

I now see that it says the CPS is used to flash the firmware and the official firmware tool is for the driver only. Oops! I need to read more carefully.

Thank you very much for clarifying that.

Note that you also need to specify the path to the proper "donor" file in the OpenGD77 CPS Firmware loader when loading OpenGD77 firmware.
For MD-9600/RT90/MD-UV380/RT3S/DM-1701 it's "MD9600-CSV(2571V5)-V26.45.bin" extracted from https://www.passion-radio.com/index.php ... chment=760
