Knob vs. Up/Down Arrows

Post by K6DRK » Sun Jan 14, 2024 9:58 pm

My Retevis RT3S and TYT MD-UV390 work great with the OpenGD77 firmware. But my Baofeng DM-1701 has a slightly different behavior. On the first two, the up/down arrows change the Contact, while the knobs change the channels. On the DM-1701, however, both the knob and the arrows change the channel. I upgraded the firmware using MD9600-CSV(2571V5)-Y26.45.bin (donor) and OpenDM1701.zip. Shouldn't the 1701 work the same as the others?

DM-1701 has Up / Down and P1/P2 (Left /Right), which people generally prefer to using the rotary control

i.e Some people want to use the rotary control to change channel or frequency, some people want to use the front panel buttons, hence the firmware uses both the rotary control and the Up/Down buttons as Up/Down

Becuase the UV380 does not have Left / Right (P1/P2 on the 1701) we were forced to use Up/Down as Left / Right in some instances

Its not practical for us to rewrite all the screens to have 2 completely different, user selectable, UI paradigms
