APRS Signal cannot be displayed on the map with TYT MD UV380

Post by BH6BEZ » Sun Aug 27, 2023 3:12 pm

Recently I installed OpenGD77 firmware on my TYT- MD-UV380 and I set APRS like the following picture but the map did not display my station and location although I have set my position on the transmitter
And what's more, I can confirm the APRS frequency is correct
My transmitter is TYT MD-UV380 and current firmware version is OpenGD77 Built 20230818125527 with Japanese display
One of my friend told me that's might because Preamble is too short and some TNC cannot react or iGate devices' squelch and I'd like to know how to deal with it and make my APRS work normally

have you created an analogue channel called aprs and allocated it to aprs1 (option under the squelch level) ?

that looks good, however, i do not know the aprs frequencies in the 70cm band in your area, is 144.640 MHz the allocated one for your area?

I had a similar issue to the OP with the same set up until I changed Via2 to WIDE2-2. I don't know enough about APRS at the moment to fully understand why this makes a difference, but if I change back to WIDE2-1 it stops working again. I believe it is part of specifying how many times the APRS packet may be repeated on-air before it either hits an iGate or gets dropped, ie., it's a 'time to live' type setting.

It may not be the OP's issue, but I'll throw it out there for consideration.

AFIK. This is because your local gateway is not directly connected to the aprs.fi network, the -1 or -2 relates to the number of 'hops', so it looks like your receiving station may need to retransmit the AX25 to another station before it finally gets onto the internet.

There is plenty of information about the APRS settings on the internet.

I won't change the default setting from WIDE2-1 to WIDE2-2 because this will cause additional unnecessary traffic on the AX25 network, when for most people WIDE2-1 works fine and does not create unncessary traffic

Yes,in my case it is because the nearest receiving station with a gateway connection is two hops away - I was not suggesting that the default should be changed, I was merely offering it as a potential solution to the OP's issue in the event that they were in a similar situation to myself vis-a-vis their nearest gateway.

OK.

No worries

It seems a lot of this is outside of our control and a lot of the problems people are posting about not actually related to whether the APRS function in the firmware works or not.

IIRC most posts assume if its not working then it must be a firmware problem :-(

For sure this Freq. is in use for APRS and I'm asking the admin of local amateur radio authority about this too
The main question is how can I deal with it.
