UV380 + DM-1701 Beta 2023 03 08

Post by VK3KYY » Wed Mar 08, 2023 3:31 am

A new Beta is avialable for the UV380/RT3S and DM-1701

This version aims to fix keypad scan issues on some UV380/RT3S and hopefully also works on the DM-1701. Thanks to Colin G4EML for this fix.

It also changes the Calibration menu Frequency Adjust to show the value as +/- 127 instead of an arbitary number from 0 to 255
It also fixes rollover issues with numbers in this menu, and also fixes and internal issue which was causing the settings to be unncessarily marked as 'dirty' and needing to be saved

Hopefully this Beta can become the first Stable release if no bugs are found.

Just flashed it in my MD-UV390 and everything seems to work just fine. Thank you so much!

That's great news! Can't wait to check it out. I suppose the IDE you're using for this version is SW4STM32 instead of MCUXpresso, right?

BTW, this beta seems to still have the "click" noise in the menus w/eco mode. Once I fully understand the new code (I've played around with the GD77 sources, but I suppose this will be different), I'll try to see where it comes from and help solve it. However, I wouldn't even consider this as a bug, as normally the radio is never left in a menu unless you're changing something, and in the CH and VFO UIs the click doesn't happen. It's only something cosmetic and doesn't compromise any functionality at all.

All STM radio firmware is built using the official STM IDE called STM32CubeIDE

I must admit I forgot about the click bug. I did briefly look at the code to try to understand why the problem would happen in the menus and not the VFO or Channel screen, but supporting the DM-1701 and also processing bug fixes for the DCDM Rx and the DTMF + CTCSS (from Colin) took higher priority

RT-3S without GPS, updated and stable. No chance of returning to the original firmware. TKS team.

That’s totally understandable.

I didn’t know DCDM was supported. Is it only on Rx? Will it be supported on Tx eventually?

DCDM Rx always worked on the GD77 etc, but somehow some code got deleted from the UV380 version so that it didnt work.

DCDM Tx is unlikely ever to be supported because

1. DCDM is unncessary for ham radio, as it is a feature to allow 2 simplex radios on the same frequency on different TimeSlots, with or without a master reference base station for synchronisation.
This function is used by commercial operators becuase they pay per channel, and it is cheaper if they can use the same channel for 2 different communications.
On Ham radio we have a huge spectrum and can simply use different frequencies.

2. AFIK. DCDM is manufacturer specific , it is not part of the ETSI spec, and is covered by patents for the Motorola version

3. There is no documentation on how to configure the C6000 DMR chip for operation in this mode.

I agree, it’s not really necessary for ham radio. The only use would be for a single frequency repeater, and it’s my understanding that the RF chip can’t handle changing from Tx to Rx that quickly. I was asking out of curiosity.

GD-77 RF chip does not seem to be capable of switching from Tx to Rx fast enough to handle SFR. The official programmers may know a way to make the RF chip work faster but there is no documentation about if this is possible

MD-9600 may be capable of SFR but we did not have time to develop code to test this.

MD-2017 may also be able to support SFR becuase it seems to have 2 x AT1846S transcievers, but we don't know the internal connections
