ALPHA 2022 11 02

Post by VK3KYY » Wed Nov 02, 2022 7:43 am

New Alpha version

downloads/MDUV380/Firmware/d7fe166768e6 ... d6335d4788

downloads/MDUV380/Firmware/Latest

This version has a separate GPS screen, and removes the GPS page from the Radio Info screen
GPS has to be enabled in Options->General Options -> GPS
Options are
None - GPS detected in the radio
Off - GPS detected but not enabled
On - GPS detected and enabled
NMEA - GPS detected and enabled and NMEA data from the GPS module is sent via the USB Serial connection.
Note when NMEA is enabled, the CPS will intially not be able to connect to the radio. You should disable NMEA when using the CPS.
The firmware will also automatically disable NMEA mode when there is a CPS request, but at the moment the CPS can not recover from receiving NMEA data when it connects to the radio.

The new GPS screen has 2 pages,
Page 1 shows position after GPS fix has been achived and shows bar graphs of GPS satellite RSSI
Page 2 shows polar plot the satellites, when the GPS module provides this data.

I will post new Voice Prompts and also new localisation .h files later today

perfect and well done - THANKS ;-)

But what does "None - GPS detected in the radio" mean ?
Selectable options are: 'Off', 'On' and 'NMEA'.

Of the options are Off, On and NMEA, this means that the firmware has detected a GPS in your radio

However unless you enable the GPS , set to On, then the GPS screen does not show any data.
It should display "GPS" "Off" including translations into other langauges for "Off"

Is "None - GPS detected in the radio" the exact text you are seeing ????

I think Wolfgang is refering to a typo error in your original post.

'None - GPS detected in the radio'

should probably have read

'None - No GPS detected in the radio'

Indicating that with no GPS fitted there will be no Options available.

Thanks Colin, I outsmarted myself into the state of confusion, because my rt-3s is equipped with GPS
Reading 'None - No GPS detected in the radio' will explain what some may see ;-)

Thanks. Just received RT-3s today to play with - and here we have another alpha ;)

However, there are two things I'd like to mention:
1. It looks like in NMEA mode radio sends only <LF> at the end of each line, not <CR><LF> as per NMEA-0183 standard.
2. I have no issues reading NMEA messages in putty (except the above-mentioned absence of <CR> at line end) - but u-center somehow disables NMEA on the radio. What exactly CPS does to switch NMEA mode off? Does it tinker with RTS/DTR lines? Unfortunately there is no option in u-center to play with RTS and DTR - or at least I haven't found one. Otherwise it's a great GNSS software.

I will change the NMEA output to be CR LF

The firmware does not support flow control.

Because NMEA output is a new feature, I need to update the CPS to handle that the radio may be sending NMEA data constantly

At the moment, as vsoon as the radio receives any data via USB, the NMEA data output is disabled, but the CPS seems to have a problem with this.
So I will need to change the CPS to fix this

I tested U-Centre and it sends data via USB, which was disabling the NMEA output.

In the next version, I stopped the output being disabled, but people will need to disable NMEA output before attempting to use the CPS or the radio in Hotspot mode.

BTW.

u-centre does not seem to support decoding of Chinese satellite data.

How about not to disable NMEA output on UART RX completely - but to suppress it for a few seconds? It should be sufficient for CPS to establish a communication.

Also, does CPS use some kind of handshake now? I.e. the radio waits not just any UART output from PC - but a predefined byte sequence.

And it would be great to add a simple NMEA parser to CPS. Something like GPS time, Lat/Lon and number of SVs.
