Problems with the GPS.

Post by DO1ABC » Wed Mar 13, 2024 4:52 pm

Hello community,

I have two TYT-MD9600 devices and problems with the GPS.

Of course, according to the original operating instructions,
I made all the settings for receiving the GPS signal.
But unfortunately the devices can neither find satellite nor GPS.
I documented the problem in a series of photos.
- Since I can only put 3 photos here, I have a link to several images here:
http://do1abc.vfkmarburg.de/index.php/p ... yt-md9600/

The GPS and satellite options are displayed in the menu, but no data is displayed.
I saw the GPS radio on an identical device, the Retevis-RT90, from a radio amateur friend of mine Why the GPS doesn't work on the TYT-MD9600 is absolutely unclear to me.
Have I perhaps forgotten something? Do I need a separate GPS antenna?
I also asked my questions in various forums and added pictures.
But nobody could help me.
The question came up in the forum as to whether I had even bought GPS versions.
Unfortunately I don't have any information about the original support from TYT.
For the original TYT-CPS I use the firmware "MD9600-CSV-GPS(2571V5)-P26.45.bin".
I also read various reports that the TYT-MD9600 often had problems with GPS and that the workmanship was not of good quality.
Yes, at least there is a GPS note on my devices and the boxes.
And to be on the safe side, I tried both variants.
Once with the manufacturer's original CPS and once with OpenGD77.
In both cases I found a subsection for GPS.
In the OpenGD77 software "Update firmware" is displayed to me. that I should use the donor firmware "MD9600-CSV(2571V5)-V26.45.bin". I noticed that there is no GPS noted in the file. To continue, I was informed that I should use the firmware "MD9600_firmware_V5HW.bin".
In OpenGD77 I had to activate GPS separately in the General menu.
But nothing happens.
Do you perhaps have any suggestions as to what else could be done?

No problem, we all have a Google translator ;-)

The approach with the GPS antenna needs to be checked.
I suspect that this GPS antenna is in the device.
Both devices were purchased brand new.
So I still have warranty.
And if there really is a problem with the GPS antenna, the dealer won't be happy about having to solve the problem.
Unless I can solve the problem myself.
Do you happen to have a photo of where I can find the GPS antenna?
Because if I have to open both devices, the dealer might avoid the warranty,

Can you enable the GPS in options?

If so, the OpenGD77 software has detected NMEA data from the GPS during start.

I have a a MD-9600 but it's inside the house so I have never verified if my GPS receive anything.
I have some ideas to feed the L1 inside with a GPS distribution amplifier from my outside GPS antenna but I haven't tested that idea yet.

Yes, at least NMEA can be activated on one device via the General Option.
But there is no data and the satellite cannot be found. The display remains blank.

It would have been better if there had been a separate small antenna connection for the GPS.

It's a insensitive chip and a bad antenna inside the radio.

One solution is to use an external antenna, there is threads about that.

If the Options allow NMEA output tobe selected , then there must have been some data from the GPS module that the firmware has detected when the radio is turned on

The GPS model is in the front section of the radio and it's easy to remove this, open it , and access the GPS module and replace it if necessary

Every day when I get home from work I try something new.
That's what makes amateur radio interesting - experimenting!

Because of the warranty, I don't want to open the devices yet and wait to see what the dealer does.
But I'm starting to think that it could be the GPS module.

If the dealer does not help. Its easy to change the GPS module

I made a video that shows how to attach and external GPS module, in a MD-9600 that was not fitted with a GPS.

You can see, its not very difficult to make changes to the GPS.

In your case the biggest problem will be unsoldering the old module.

That's a good thing.
If the dealer causes problems and I actually have to change the module, which GPD modules are recommended for replacement?

I found something small here. Is this a suitable GPS module?
