Follow up on GPS for MD-9600

Post by AA3RP » Sun Nov 12, 2023 8:58 am

I have been reviewing the thread on the MD-UV380 / RT3S GPS upgrade or addition, plus the one thread on MD-9600 new antenna install.

I am curious if there is anyone who has installed GPS into MD-9600 that did not come originally with GPS. Also it has been mentioned in the past about adding a 3.5 mm plug on the MD-9600 for an external GPS antenna.

Any update or recent information on either of these two queries ?

I have several MD-9600 radios and with the APRS work and satellite function it seems have a good GPS would be most helpful.

I have an external GPS attached to my MD-9600 via a cable from the back of the radio.

This cable is connected to the GPS connections in the front panel PCB of the radio and runs over the top of the PCB and out of the back of the radio through a hole in the heat sink.

V4A aka V5 hardware radios have a rubber plug in the heat sink, which can be removed, and the cable can be passed through he resulting hole.

Is the MD-9600 a GPS model that came with the GPS installed or did you add it to a none GPS (standard) model ?

Also would it be possible to see a few pictures of the work you did and any notes that you think would be helpful to anyone else that would want to do this to their radio ?

My md-9600 has gps installed from factory, but I use it from home QTH so it's not so useful.
And the radio would need an external GPS antenna to get better performance if it's in a car.

Just wanted to report that the GPS in my new RT-3S does work in the house but my even newer RT-90's GPS does not. I plan to dash mount the RT-90 so hope that will work well enough.

I have mine under dash mounted, takes a little time to get a fix but it works...

My MD9600 did not come with a GPS. I soldered wires to the front PCB and use an external GPS.

Just an update - with the radio running on my passenger seat the GPS never "sees" even a single satellite :( . I hope it starts working when I mount the radio on the top of the dash?
