MD-9600 volume control sensitivity

Post by VK5DET » Tue Apr 11, 2023 8:48 am

I have a v2.1 MD-9600 on which the volume control rotates through approx 300 degrees, however, volume goes from zero to max in less than30 degrees. I was previously running factory formware1.24 where the issue was the same as with current OpenGD77 alpha firmware forMD-9600. Any suggestions on how to fix this volume control issue?

The pot fitted is the wrong type with a B (linear) taper. For volume controls it should be an A (Log) taper. This directly controls the volume so the firmware has no control over its action.

You basically have two options,

1. Replace the pot with an A taper version. This is the best solution.
Part number RK09L1140A5E by ALPs can be made to fit but needs the front panel hole enlarging slightly.
Another user found these https://aliexpress.com/item/4000148900570.html which apparently fit directly. Make sure you order the A10K version.

Or

2. Fit a 1K resistor between the pots wiper and ground. This doesn't work as well as changing the pot but it does improve the situation. TYT started fitting 2k2 resistors on later version radios but the early ones had nothing. In both cases fitting a 1K improves things.
This is an old mod that has been around since radios had valves (tubes). The 1K resistor reduces the volume at low settings of the pot but has less affect as the pot approaches maximum.

Thanks Colin. 1k resister now fitted as per your Mod document which I found in the Files section of the MD9600 FB site. My MD-9600 is now somewhat more useable.
