I ordered one of these P.S. plus Radio specials when this vendor first started offering it. Sadly the radio was over 4 years old based on the serial number (which starts with the date of manufacture coded into it). The vendor was great about taking the shipment back, so I had no reason to complain.

I just recently found out that Let's Get Ready (LGR) in Los Angeles has the MD-9600 in stock for $200. (free shipping w/in US) (I didn't know when I bought mine on Aliexpress a month ago). It's listed on their website.
I have talked to LGR and they have pulled one off their stock and the serial number starts with 2010A . (So I think it should be V5 hardware, but I can't be certain.) (I also can't guarantee that all their stock starts w/ this serial number / date code.)
I have no relations with LGR except as a very happy customer. Bob there is very responsive and very generous in their support and warranty claims (for my Anytone D878 for example).
Their price is also the best as well, that I am now tempted to buy a 2nd one from them.

I just purchased one of the new ones with the unbranded CPUs and it’s working wonderfully with the open source firmware.

Yes that was I actually.
And I just ordered another one from LGR, but I don't have it here yet, still across the border.
When I get it, I will be able to do any A/B test to compare the 2 CPUs, if required, for the dev team.
I am also curious what other diff could they have, esp the PCBs seem to have diff ver markings.
