DM-1801 or Pi-Star issue ???

Post by LZ1SVO » Sun Jul 09, 2023 7:57 am

Hi All,
so for a while the radio and the hotspot were in the drawer, collecting dust ( too busy for the hobby :( ), but recently decided to see what is going on ihn the AIR and just listen a bit. Before i put everything away all was working! So yesterday i plugged in the hotspot, turned on the radio and tried as usual the local parrot so i can test if everything is OK, but despite hotspot was showing that it was working, the radio did not activate the hotspot, but when i press the PTT red LED blinks 3 times on the radio and TIMEOUT comes on the screen.
What I have done so far:
1.I have reflashed the pi-star hotspot ( mmdvm duplex chinese clone) several times with different firmware versions and the result is the same.
2.Reflashed the latest opengd77 to the DM-1801
3.With hotspot on or off the TIMEOUT still comes on the screen, and i was wondering is there some kind of feedback between repeaters and radios in DMR ?
4.Looked at the pi-star logs, coudnt see anything interesting ( at least to me)
I am trying to troubleshoot the issue but i am short of ideas now.
Any ideas are appreciated greatly
All the best

Hi,

you didn't mention if the hotspot is a Dual or a Simplex one.
If it's simplex, change your channel configuration to Simplex mode.

Also, you NEED to calibrate your hotspot (you will find some YT video about it, it's pretty simple).

Cheers.

Hi, it is a Duplex one ( i have mentioned it in the first post :)
Ok will have a look how to calibrate the hotspot, did not know about that.
Thanks

UPDATE:

actually messing with the TX and RX offsett did the job, thnaks so much, i have been banging my head for the last 2 days. All working now as expected.

How large is the duplex spacing ?

I've heard that you should have at least 5 MHz as the receiver part in the duplex hat otherwise will be swamped with RF from the transmitter
and have bad sensitivity.
This will affect 2 slot DMR as the hotspot and radio needs to synchronize the TS timing.

In Sweden we have only 432-438 MHz and the standard repeater shift is -2 MHz , and because of the bandplan it's not easy to get enough spacing.
I have a MMDVM_HS_Dual_Hat which is using 434.9375 TX and 432.9375 RX, this works fine with D-Star but not so good with DMR and I usually
get those TIMEOUT errors to as the sync is failing.
If I crank up the power on the OpenGD77 radios it usually work better but it's not 100% stable.

You can also get better results by separating the TX and RX antennas.

The duplex spacing is exactly 5MHZ: RX 440.300.000 TX 445.300.000, before that it was 8MHZ and did no difference, i was just messing with the frequencies to see if they are the issue. I went into Configuration -> Expert -> MMDVM Host - > TX and RX offset to -500 and it worked. Now i am messing with my second simplex hotspot and it is not working so far. Will report what is going on. Just i have noticed on the syslog of pi-star that other services are loaded and started, then they fail, but htey are disabled in the GUI, any ideas why is this like that ?

Here is an actual log:
