it's not the same cable, it's just a stright kenwood usb cable with no UART chip. It's the one I used to connect it to the rpi pi-star.
But apparently it's not a cable problem... the radio just turns off unless I keep the volume knob near the "power off". If I increase the volume, it gets down. Keeping the volume knob as low as possibile before the turn-off "click" it works.

Maybe I'm just better buy a 1701 (everyone is ok right? No special version trouble)

AFIK there is only one hardware version for the DM1701

I recently bought a DM-1801UV and can't enter firmware mode using the two side button procedure. Is there a new way of doing it or did Baofeng remove the capability?

Never heard of a DM-1801UV

Baofeng replaced the old DM-1801 with a model called the DR-1801 which is completely different hardware inside the case, and is not updateable

Are you sure you bought a DM-1801UV and not a DR-1801UV

I'm getting a "cant connect" error while trying to update my firmware. I'm not sure what the issue is bc the read and write is working fine.

UPDATE :
i for got to: Turn on your transceiver in bootloader mode (SK1 + SK2 + power on).
