It's a fresh windows install, Win 7 and SP1 nothing else.

This is catch 22, I can't get the GD77 firmware onto the rig without the software and the software won't run without the firmware being installed.
The HID driver is issued from Microsoft, not the CPS installation (unlike the serial driver).

The CPS won't work, the "OpenGD77 Support" window neither, until an OpenGD77 featured HT is connected, but the "Firmware loader" embedded into the CPS will do the job, for a valid HID device (meaning a supported HT in bootloader mode).

OK well somehow finally managed to get it to work.

The firmware has been flashed, now the rig has a screen saying

Settings update
OK

And a green flashing light on the front of the rig.

Do I just wait for it to finish doing whatever it is doing?

No, it's just an informational message, that the firrmware initialized its internal settings (the things which are not in codeplug, like display options, sound options etc.). Just confirm it by the "ok" key (probably the green key - I don't know your radio exactly).

FYI.

I have changed your username to your callsign, as its site policy for people who have callsigns, to use the callsign as their username

I noticed that when I could not login. I was planning to change it today, as I had realised that everyone else was using callsigns.

Thanks for all the help, the firmware is loaded and all seems good at the moment.
Trying to get my head around programming a code plug.
Many differences between the original and the GD77CPS.

FYI the problem I was experiencing was all down to timing.
Here's what finally got it to work.

Put rig into DFU mode with cable plugged into rig but NOT computer.

Plug cable into computer, and wait for Windoze to do it's thing.

Run GD77CPS

Then follow instructions for updating firmware.

Voila!

OK

I have not seen the Windows problem before.

The DFU uses the bootloader written by the manufacturer, it is USB HID not a Com port.
We never update the bootloader part of the CPU ROM.

When the firmware is running the radio becomes a Com device so that it can be used as a hotspot by connecting to PiStar, and hence the codeplug transfers are also done via USB serial / Com port
