Check that TA-Tx is off. the trbo group in nz is a motorola network.
Have you also looked into eth choke on the lead trick to choke the RF off.
Also saw something about the earth on the mic lead - if that's relevant ?

can't you get that by disabling ctss and dcs so you can hear everything on the frequency (assuming None is your filter and your current TG List is empty).
(I might not have that quite right but I hope you get the idea - turn off all filtering and hear everything.)

under the UMP section you have a unix path to a tty not a COM port
