The pre-installed OpenGD77 version is certainly older - I would update, regardless of the problem.

As recommended, in case I need to reinstall the official firmware, I would like to back up the original firmware, before installing OpenGD77 - but I can't find it anywhere. … I also wonder why people set a Rx CTCSS on their radios, unless you have a lot of local QRM. Juts becuase the repeater transmits CTCSS doesnt mean you have to set your radio to have Rx CTCSS … One reason to enable RX CTCSS may be, when the repeater is operating C4FM and FM on the same frequency. ...

The UV-5R cable does not work with RD5!

Be careful, maybe MD-390 and MD-UV390 are not identical. For example, the MD-390 has a Double Conversion Superheterodyne receiver whereas the UV390 has the Direct Conversion receiver.
