GPS on DM1701 best hardware hookup?

Post by ve2wkr » Thu Apr 20, 2023 4:31 pm

HI, Colin,
I'm working on a solution to add a GPS receiver to the DM1701. I found that the ATGM336H module for arduino sold on aliexpress for ~$4 fits easily in the DM1701.
Looking at the code , the GPS on/off function is compiled out of the firmware, so I'll have to generate a new image.
Do you know what would be the best GPIO pin to power the GPS module ? ( I can then add the turn on/off function back in the firmware)
I see that in non MDUV380 radios usart0 is used for the GPS data input. Do you know if this is available in the DM1701 or should I use another one ?

Thanks,

Hello,

Have you managed to go forward with this project? I'm interested in also adding GPS to the DM1701.

not really. I got distracted with building DMR repeaters.
I had everything correct, but I could not solder the wire to the STM pin properly as you need a very thin wire , and I shorted 2 pins so the serial port no longer works.
I have a microscope , and could probably fix it , but I no longer have the time. The tricky part was finding a GPS antenna to fit at the top of the radio between the knobs. I used one out of a dead GPS watch because i could not find a similar one for sale. If you install the GPS , just power it permanently with the CPU power as the GPS off feature is not very useful and the power savings is minimal.

Goos luck.
