Sorry David but I have to ask for help, I'm at my wit's end (already pulled out all my hair!)
I have everything installed on a Pi3b with the official 7" screen, a USB mic and an amplified speaker plugged into the pi audio-out port. DMRStation starts up fine with no errors shown, it recognises both audio in and out and starts ok. The interface is shown with 5 tabs Main, TG, LH, Set and Info. On the Main tab I have no PTT button but I do have an "L" button. Presumably because I don't seem to be able to log in.
When started from a terminal after the initial few lines (no errors shown) it just repeats 2 lines:
Sending auth
NACK!
Sending auth
NACK!
etc. etc.
I'm in the UK and have the server set as 87.117.229.173
My callsign, DMRID and password in the DMRStation.ini are all correct and have been checked and rechecked a dozen times. The repeater ID is set to 235****77
I've now run out of things to check - any clues? Please?

Install at-spi2-core
sudo apt-get install at-spi2-core
For some reason i had to install pulseaudio again
sudo apt-get install pulseaudio

sudo apt-get install pavucontrol paprefs
My studio mic is set at 57 in pavucontrol
In the DMR Station config file you need to make sure the password is the same as the one in your Branmister Selfcare or it wont work .
In the config file i all so removed the TG 91 as did not wanting it booting up all the time on that TG .

Solved!! The first time I tried to get this up and running I used the latest "Raspberry Pi OS" newly downloaded from raspberrypi.org and failed miserably without really finding out why.
This morning I decided to try again using an older copy of buster I had in my downloads folder (dated February this year), and it worked out of the box! Everything remained the same esp. DMRStation.ini so I guess something that affects DMRStation has changed recently in the new OS.
The moral is if you're struggling to get DMRStation working, try with an older version of the OS

One important remark that fbtft_device and flexfb are gone in 5.4 linux kernel.
https://github.com/notro/fbtft/wiki
So if new distribution RPI base on kernel 5.4 and above the TFT display will be not works
