Band Limits

Post by m1dyp » Thu Jan 09, 2020 6:58 pm

i have just read this on the open gd77 repository on github

'Partial fix for #332. Limits are now set to the USA bands, including …
…the 222Mhz - 225Mhz band. (Note the limits were already too wide for Europe on 2m, so we may as well set the band limits to the USA ranges.'

I understand that usa uses 440Mhz-450Mhz in europe it is 430Mhz-440Mhz

hopefully this will be taken into acount :D

Ken

I just extended the 70cm band down to 420Mhz, because the USA seem to be able to use 420Mhz - 450Mhz.
Previously the limits on 70cm were 430Mhz - 450Mhz.
I've also now added a range of 222Mhz to 225Mhz which I think is the USA (and other ITU region 2) allocation on the 1.25m band.
The limits on 2m are 144Mhz - 148Mhz and I know that Europe only has 144Mhz - 146Mhz.

At the moment the only way for all amateurs to be able to access their bands is to make the firmware limits wide enough to cover all the ITU region allocations.

In the longer term, I'll need to extend the codeplug data even further into the area at the bottom of the SPI Flash memory (which is not used by the official firmware at all), so that people can set their own local band limits.
But its going to take some careful consideration and a lot of programming to do this

thank you roger

I do have a NOV (notice of variation) renewable yearly, for 146-147Mhz to explore digital modes etc

Well, in that case the OpenGD77 will be OK for you as long as you don't go above 147Mhz

Actually. Although the band limits in radios stop people using the wrong frequency by accident, I think band limits are dumbing-down Ham radio.
My license allows me to be build my own radios, and its my responsibility to ensure that I'm only emitting RF on the permitted frequencies.

My first HF rig was valve with a transistor VFO, and it would operate outside the Ham bands, because the VFO had a 1Mhz tuning range, and you just selected the band from a mechanical switch, e.g. 3.5Mhz, or 28Mhz or 29Mhz etc.

I had to modify the next HF transceiver I bought, as it had old band limits in it, which prevented it working above 7.1Mhz on 40m.

I've not taken my FT-99A apart yet to do the modification to remove band limits, because it involves pulling quite a lot of the radio apart.
But I do have a RS-918, and because thats open source, the band limits could easily be removed.

hi, as if i would tx outside the permitted bands. yes of course we can all tx outside allowed bands but as you say its our responsibility to stick to the plans

ok on your other radios, look nice, only hf set here is ic7100 but it suits me 0-30, 6, 4, 2, 70 and dstar. although at the moment its doing wspr on 30m :D

take care

Hi don't use HF that much.

Too much QRM here, which is why I bought the RS-918 to use portable - but I've still never had time to use it :-(
