Hello, I need your help, I need basic settings that I can't get answered despite a long search. I installed the latest version and recreated an analog channel with 144,800 Mhz and assigned APRS to it. A new entry is created in the new APRS directory. My transmission works, purely acoustically to a few km away access on 144.800Mhz DM0MAX. Unfortunately, my transmission does not generate an entry in the APRS map. What is wrong? First question, do I need a registration or activation to use the APRS-service, similar to the DMR directory? Is there a way to check my mailing as raw data?

Last heard a station directly: 2023-07-08 03:43:07 CDT (47d 7h35m ago)

DM0MAX has not reported hearing any stations to the APRS-IS network in 47 days. The comment says that it is a gateway so it is not hearing any stations or it is broken and not reporting them. Maybe it has been completely shutdown.

I have now succeeded in sending a data packet to a gateway. I'm happy that it works.

I'd suggest using APZO77 (OpenGD77) or something else APZ??? for the default as APN??? is for "Network nodes, digis, etc" (digis being digipeaters) which I don't think applies to OpenGD77. Obviously people can just change it to whatever but this would be a more suitable default as there really isn't another namespace that fits OpenGD77.

Why would we need to register a destination?

Initially the destination was defaulted to "APRS" but this seems to be deprecated as a destintion, and APN000 was suggested as an alternative

Hi Roger. The APRS destination is described as such: "This is a machine-readable index of APRS device and software identification strings."

Basically it helps identify what device or application generated the packet. On my own APRSPH bot (https://aprsph.net) I simply used APZIOR (since the script is called "IORETH"). Using "APRS" as a destination mixes up packets with other devices or applications that also use APRS as the destination.

I agree with the recommendation to use APZO77 as the destination to denote "openGD77". The third character describes the type of application, and "Z" means "experimental." There is no need to register this during the experimental phase, but it is recommended to register it once stable, so that other devices and applications also know what kind of device is generating the packet.

No, it's not about routing. It's about identification. The term "destination" may actually be misleading, but it's actually more of an identifier rather than routing.

BTW, is it possible to change my username to DU2XXR? That's the callsign I am currently using.

But... Can't AX25 packets be sent to any station (destination) , i.e the destination of the APRS packet could be set to VK3KYY-0 can't it.

Albeit I'm not running a packet receiver at the moment.
