Weatherproofing for cold and humid ...

Post by footloosejava » Sat Nov 30, 2019 1:42 am

Had a nasty surprise today.
Took my beast skiing ....
had it in an outside pocket.
The keypad would not respond.
The only buttons that worked were the talk button, the top orange button and the volume dial.

Took a drive home and 30 minutes of warmup to work again.

So ... keypad doesn't like cold and/or condensation?

Solutions?

Good to know. I almost took mine our snowshoeing today but decided against it. My Anytone seems to work well in cold when skiing and snowshoeing.

You could take it apart and try to waterproof it a bit, with silicon sealant, but it would be hard if you ever had to take it apart again

Or Do a search on

"Transparent Waterproof Pouch Bag Case Protect for Radio Walkie Talkie"

On your favourite online retailer. I just saw one for $3 which looks like it had an RD-5R in it

Tonight, in the car (warm enough), it also locked up with the keyboard input. I'm thinking now that it is actually a loose connection problem and that skiing may have shook it enough to make it lose contact (probably encouraged by cold and/or condensation).

It has def happened now in a dry situation and not in the cold.

It might not be humidity, it might be this: https://www.opengd77.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=218
I also thought of HW problem, but then saw that post.

I have not uploaded the latest daily build yet that seems to be associated with keypad lockups. I can test the cold performance this morning easily- we're full on winter here with a couple of feet of snow in the backyard and currently 32F. I'll go put the radio outside for a bit and see what happens.

Results from quick test:

Conditions: 28F, 51% RH, light wind, lots of snow on the ground

I let the radio equilibrate to the outside conditions for about 1 hour, then turned it on and operated. As expected, it was sluggish but worked fine. Upon taking the radio inside to warm up, it missed on one key press (of the red button) and there was noticeable condensation on the radio. Now it seems to be fine and operating no problem.
