What is the advantage of openGD77 vs OEM firmware?

Hello,
I'm new to openGD77 and i own a DM-1801 but not new to DMR. I own Motorola XPR6550, XPR4550, Allunce HD-1

I have a Zumspot on a Raspberry PI running Pi-Star and a repeater with a ST32DVM board running Pi-star.

I started to wonder, what is the advantage of openGD77 firmware/software over OEM firmware/software?

Thanks

Usability. It's more designed for hams than the original firmware, which is designed for BOS..

What does "BOS" mean?
It's a german abbreviation and means simplified all those with a "blue light" (here in germany) on the car (police, firefighters, ambulance, ...).

With OpenGD77, you don't have to dedicate a programmed channel to every frequency / talk group ID pair.

You can define one channel for a hotspot or repeater's frequencies, and then scroll through all the talk groups that you've defined as available on it without changing to different programmed channels.

There are a lot of other subtle improvements that make Hams smile...

Welcome to the project.

so i would program one channel, receive frequency, transmit frequency, then give it a alpha tag.
then i would program contact ID's and then add all the contact ID's into ONE TG List.

Then all i have to do is scan through each Talk Group, pick one and use it?

What about slot 1 and slot 2?

Would the repeater still have the ability to have two conversations at the same time?

hmm..

still trying to understand how open GD77 works.
tnx

Basically, yes, it works like this.
  • You create the Contacts (TG and PC),
  • You create a TG List, and add all TG/PC you want to use transmit on, but that list could be incomplete, see below),
  • You set one channel per "repeater" (it's all the frequency informations, Color Code and TimeSlot, but that could be changed on the fly on the GD). On that channel, you set TG List to the one you created, and set the Contact to None.
Once the codeplug is flashed on your GD, Up/Down key select the channel, Left/Right the contact in the contact list.
You can change the TimeSlot with the * key.
The firmware is filtering the TimeSlot only by default, that means you will able to listen to any TG that your repeater is spitting out.
You can also override the current TG (Contact) on your GD with simple key sequence.

I hardly suggest you to read the complete manual:

Cheers.

Thanks Daniel,
I'm starting to understand how openGD77 works. I will program my radio and try it out.
As they say..

Daniel,
My repeater is configured for TGIF Network on TS1 and Brandmeister on TG2.
Do i specify Timeslot 1 when setting up talkgroups on TGIF and Timeslot 2 for Brandmeister?tnx
