New Beta 2023 09 03

Post by VK3KYY » Sun Sep 03, 2023 10:51 am

A new UV380/390 / DM-1701 radio Beta is available

https://opengd77.com/downloads/MDUV380_ ... dc4f64c5ea
https://opengd77.com/downloads/MDUV380_ ... are/Latest

There are significant changes in this release which effect all radios, not only the UV380 and also effect the CPS

Because there was almost no ROM space remaining in the GD-77 and similar radios, including the DM-1801 and RD-5R, we had to change how non-English languages are supported.

The firmware now only includes English + one other 'additional' language. The 'additional' language is now merged into the firmware by the CPS, when it is uploaded into the radio

The data for each language is stored in separate files e.g. French.gla , and the language file version must match the language version in the firmware

So that the language and firmware files are kept together we are now using .zip files

Each zip file contains the firmware bin file and all supported language .gla files

The new CPS, released today downloads/CPS/Latest/OpenGD77CPSInstall ... .04.01.exe now supports .zip as well as .bin files

In the CPS firmware loader screen, there is a dropdown menu to select the additional language to me merged into the firmware

Linux users are supported by use of these Python based loaders

downloads/Linux_tools

Thanks to Daniel F1RMB for all his work modifying the firmware, making new build tools, and also updating the CPS and Linux tools.

In addition to the this big change, there have been many other changes to the firmware and CPS

• Remove APRS Destination from CPS and now use APOG77 built into the firmware
• Add APRS ambiguity support in CPS and firmware
• Add APRS support for ‘Fixed position’ location Lat/Lon in CPS and the firmware
• Add APRS support for 300 Baud transmission.
• Add Location Lat/Lon support to Channel data in the CPS and support in the firmware
MDUV380 shows distance in km from radio location to Channel Lat/Lon on the Channel screen.
GD77 and MD9600 the distance in km is shown if button SK1 (P2 on MD9600) is held in.

Note. The distance does not currently update if the radio changes position until the channel screen is reloaded. This function will be improved in the future to automatically recalculate and redisplay the distance if it changes by more than 0.1km
• MD9600 now supports short APRS comments.
• Firmware character font – Add missing N/n with Caron (F1RMB)
• Fix frequency calibration bug on all radio types
Change APRS Tx method. SK1 is no longer required to transmit APRS.
Channels with and APRS config set, will now only transmit APRS, not voice and transmission of APRS is triggered simply by pressing the PTT.
APRS Tx ends immediately after the end of the data even if the PTT is held in.

• Improve ‘UI Notification’ popup (F1RMB)
• MDUV380 only – Add volume control visual display, See Options->Display options-> Volume : Off/On (F1RMB)
• Stop GPS NMEA output when CPS uploads/downloads the codeplug or other data (F1RMB)
• Satellite mode APRS frequency will now only transmit APRS
It is no longer possible to send APRS on the ‘Voice’ frequency of satellites
• Czech language updates (OK2MOP, Pavel )

CPS
• Changes to APRS screen to remove Destination and add Ambiguity and Fixed position and 300 baud Tx
• CPS has been updated to remove non functioning Tevel 1 and Tevel 8 satellites
• Maximum number of satellites has been increased from 15 to 25
• Channels can now have Latitude and Longitude values

Voice prompts
• Czech language updates (OK2MOP, Pavel )

Edit.

This version had several bugs, so a new bug fix version had been produced

I found a bug
If you press PTT on a channel with the APRS configuration activated, and you do not have a location because the GPS has not yet done its job, the equipment remains in TX. The radio must be turned off to avoid continuous TX.
My radio is a RT3S GPS

I agree EB3AM. If you have a channel with APRS configured but not GPS position, TX remains ON after releasing PTT. The only way to stop it is powering down the radio. I have a TYT MD380UV with GPS.

After having adquired GPS position, if you disconnect GPS seems as if last position was saved and the "bug" is not repeated.
May be the first time you power on the radio and you do not have any saved position, when you press PTT the APRS system waits for GPS position to trasmit it and do not release PTT.

Edit: 15s TOT does not cut PTT. Countdown continues with negative values and PTT remains ON
In my TYT MD-9600 same behavior. Moreover it is placed where GPS sats signal are impossible to be received. In consequence the radio never has GPS location and APRS TX is always ON

Reporting Small bug: APRS transmission on RT-3S and DM-1701 writes APRS TX text over the channel name which is not erased. Either wrong line is written (and it should be one line bellow) or the text should be erased first.

I do not observe the "GPS problem" on my radios, but I did not do settings reset and my position has been set manually previously. Maybe it only happens if the position is unset (manually, by GPS)?
