umm

The display may not be updating.

I've not checked the code recently
Value less then 10 are ignored. Value below 50 are divided by 12. For the other, I can't remember.

Cheers.

So the value is percentage. If I set a value of say 15 in pi-star that results in 1.25. Which is also a percentage?

Guys to change the power in pi-star you go to expert mode and mmdvmhost settings. "RF Power changes the power. 100 =1 watt. lesser numbers are less. I would like to find out how to make it 2 watts or 3 watts for longer trials. Thanks Alec N1AJW

In my case the default in pi-star is 1 which would be ignored by the DM1801 Hotspot since it apparently ignores anything below 10 as we've learned. Any value I put in doesn't change the value displayed on the radio.

It appears there is a bit of a disconnect between pi-star and Hotspot mode.

I manually set it to 50mW in the radio as a workaround.

In PiStar the value is the percentage of max power

100 = 100%
50 = 50 %

However in the OpenGD77 we ignore the value if its 100%, because the radio's 100% power is 5W and we don't want people accidentally running 5W

If you set 99% you will actually get 5W, as the OpenGD77 evaluates the 99% to the closest power setting to 99% of 5W, i.e 5W

Its not possible to control the OpenGD77 power by percentage e.g. to get 37% of 5W, because the PA drive vs output power is non-linear.
There is a quite complicated calculation to achieve the power setting steps, which uses the 1W and 5W calibration data points for the frequency you are transmitting on, and either does linear interpolation (between 1 and 5W), or uses a faction of the 1W power data point for values below 1W

This also relies on you actually calibrating your radio, because the factory calibration is wildly inaccurate.

If you don't calibrate your own radio using screen in the CPS, the power output is likely to be totally wrong.

I'm familiar with digital mode and trying to measure power.

Just for a sanity check I'm going to switch the radio to FM mode and see what my watt meter shows.

By chance is there a way to turn off the backlight in Hotspot mode?

Just switch backlight off in normal mode ant it'll remain off in hotspot mode

I enabled the logging from pi-star and noticed the power value set in MMDVMHost is actually in watts and not a percentage. Power=1 is 1Watt, Power=15 is 15 Watts. Anything under 1 is 0 Watts.

It seems you're modifying the wrong section of the MMDVM ini file. The one you're displaying here is part of the [Info] section.
The one you need to change is in [Modem] section, RFLevel value.

Cheers.
