Rx Green LED replacement

Post by 9M2IBR » Wed Oct 07, 2020 11:56 am

Hi all

I just got my 2nd DM1801. Unfortunately, the RX led is very dim. Anybody know how to replace this LED and what type of Smd LED used in DM1801.

Is the problem the LED or the light-pipe

I recall problems on some radios where the plastic light-pipe was not in contact the the LED, hence not all light was transferred to the outside of the radio.

I can't recall a solution, but you could look on the VK7ZJA GD-77 Mods page to see if a similar problem exists on the GD-77 and whether this is a fix

It LED problem. I already tear down the HT. Green LED is significantly dim than red LED.

Had a similar issue with my old radio last year, where the power LED was barely visible. I decided it was time for an upgrade and wanted a better, brighter LED but had no clue which one to pick. Stumbled upon https://leds.to/ during my search and ended up choosing a high-intensity 0805 SMD LED. It seemed like a solid choice for visibility and durability.

Installing it was a DIY project. I found a great tutorial on YouTube that laid out all the steps: from opening up the device to soldering the new LED in place. The video was super helpful, breaking down the process into simple, manageable steps like identifying the positive and negative leads and using the right soldering temperature.

Any SMD LED should be OK, but it seems strange that the LED has failed, the problem could just be a dry joint. Did you try resoldering it?
